Small Business Help Internet Business Development Getting Started

Internet Business Development - Getting Started Online
What Do You Need To Know?

Many small businesses have been persuaded that just having a website is enough. They may already have a static website, but only use it as on online business card or brochure, with just a contact form or email address. A website is developed, and just sits there on the web, rarely updated, and often just another expense, not increasing business very much. It's true that even a child can put up a website these days - but a small business website that is not fully utilized as an internet business might just as well not exist.

Those business owners are missing out because many do not understand or realise the amount of information they really need, or the resources required to build, develop and market a sustainable business on the internet. Sometimes it is thought that a specialist IT department or staff are needed, and operating the website as a business in it's own right, would take up too much time, or resources. However,

Business owners don't have to be 'techies', employ lots of IT staff, or even have a room full of equipment. These days, all that is required is a computer or laptop and access to the internet, to run an entire online business empire using Content Management Systems via online panels, with simple point and click features that make it easy for management to update websites in real time.

With the right understanding, training, knowledge and skills, a small business owner could operate a professionally developed ecommerce website in very little time each day, where all the processes and procedures are automated and dynamic. Setting up an internet business requires as much research, organization and planning as any offline business, long before a website is designed.

Knowing and understanding how everything works on the internet means that small business owners, senior managers and strategists can lead and direct the company to:

  • Transform business goals into realities
  • Maximise marketing efforts to promote products and services
  • Manage the company’s web strategy and development
  • Inspire and inform customers
  • Understand and apply search engine optimization skills and promotion
  • Use innovative media integrated video and presentations
  • Know how to boost website traffic, reputation and brand awareness
  • Represent your brand professionally
  • Have complete control and be able to manage the content and update the company website in real time
  • Maximise your marketing using web analytics

It helps to have an initial knowledge, understanding and background about the things you need to know, even before you start work on an ebusiness plan - which contains different elements to a standard offline business plan. An internet business plan can't be written and used as a working document, as it should be, if you don't know or understand how everything differs when working on the web. The format and presentation will have the same headings, but the content will be geared to how it will work for your internet business.

For example, before you start, its a good idea to learn the best ways to research on the internet, and find out how to reach your target market; what gaps there are in that market; what the competition is; whether your existing product or service can fill a gap; whether you could produce something new to fill a gap; what the trends and statistics are in your industry for future growth; and much more research just to look at feasibility.

If you don't already operate in a niche market, then you should.  One advantage of a niche business is the profitability potential compared to mass markets, and even the big boys de-fragment their markets to niche and sub niche levels on the internet.   Finding a niche, carving a unique identity and dominating a niche can all be learned.

It may be that during the research stage, you find that what you already have to sell, or thought you might like to sell, would not be a feasible proposition after all. However, you may also find that there is something out there within your niche and industry, that is in demand, not yet available, where you could jump in and dominate the market.  The secret of a successful internet business is finding something that people are looking for, and placing it right in front of them, at the right time and the right price.  Research is the key.

You will also need to gain an insight into the many aspects of operating an internet business, how to avoid ebusiness mistakes, the logical stages of development, and know how everything works, if you want to get it right.

The ideal combination and fast track route is to have an experienced internet business mentor, a complete online learning course which contains everything you need to know and understand about all the aspects of web development and apply this to your own internet business development as an integrated part of the process.  That is the magic word - integrated, when everything makes sense.
